A.D. Wright

Dr. A.D. Wright died January 26, 2010 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center after an extended illness.

Asbury Dukes Wright, Jr., the son of Miriam Newbury and Asbury Dukes Wright, Sr., was born in Gainesville, August 10, 1929. He attended local schools, graduating in the Gainesville High School Class of 1946. He graduated from Vanderbilt University cum laude, and as a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He then entered the Medical College of Georgia where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Kappa medical fraternity. After interning at Henry Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. Wright joined the Air Force, with the rank of captain and became flight surgeon while stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, FL. Upon leaving the military service, Dr. Wright began a dermatology residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham, and continued his training in fellowship dermatology at Emory University Clinic in Atlanta.

In 1960, Dr. Wright became the first dermatologist in Gainesville and was a member of the staff of Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he served a term as Chief of Staff. He was a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and was Board Certified. Dr. Wright retired in 1999 after 39 years of practice. Through the years he has been involved in many community endeavors including the establishment of Gainesville Academy which later became Lakeview Academy, and he was most recently enjoyed treating dermatology patients as volunteer at Good News Clinic.

A.D. Wright was a committed Christian and attended Gainesville Vineyard Church. He especially loved his family, his medical profession, fishing, gardening and his pets.

Dr. Wright is preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters, Miriam Wright Robinson (Tubby), Betty Ann Wright Golden and Martha Le Wright Gowder.

Surviving Dr. Wright are his wife of almost sixty years, Florence King Wright; sons, Asbury Dukes Wright, III (Berry) and his wife Jule Hunnicut Wright, Jay Alan Wright; and daughter, Janice Lynn Wright Martin and husband Milton Martin, Jr. Grandsons who survive are John Asbury Wright, William Holden Wright and Milton Jay Marcus Martin (Jay Jay) and granddaughter Malinda Nellie Martin (Nellie). Also surviving are his three brothers, Dr. J.R. Wright (Bobby) and wife Tommye, John Edward Wright (Jackie) and Franklin Perry Wright and wife Carolyn; brother-in-law, Dr. George Gowder and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will received friends on Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. David Fitzpatrick and Rev. Buddy Barron will officiate. Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery.
